Chapter Sixteen

Skate

Watching Denny pace was not helping Skate’s twitchy nerves or calming the feeling of being penned in. “Would you sit?”

“Can’t.” Denny glanced out of the window then wandered back to the bed and picked up the cup of tea he’d fetched from the kitchen earlier. “Drink your tea.” He held it out to Skate and waited for him to take it.

Skate accepted the proffered cup and set it back on the bedside table. He patted the mattress, using the only weapon he had left to try to reign in Denny’s nervous pacing. He lifted an arm, creating what he hoped was an enticing space next to him in the luxury of soft blankets and springy mattress. “Come and sit the fuck down.”

Denny snickered. “You’re so goddamn romantic, jerkwad.” He returned to the window, but at least he stayed there this time. “You just got your stitches out anyway, so no cuddling on that side.”

“It’s healed, Denny,” Skate said softly.

“Still.”

“Would you just fucking sit?”

Denny snorted and tossed him a tense smile, but he shook his head. “So romantic. Really.”

Romantic Skate certainly was not. But hearing that word, in relation to himself—in relation to them—sent a small, warm thrill deep into his belly. He hadn’t thought he’d ever get used to the idea he could imagine them as a couple, let alone hear it so casually alluded to and not feel the instant need to deny it. The whole warm-fuzzy left him bemusedly watching Danny’s back and wondering if—when—their relationship would turn the next corner. Now that he’d begun to accept it was real, his libido was in full-on greedy mode.

Denny seemed to be perfectly happy with a platonic existence. Not one word had been spoken about his earlier offer. A part of him wished Denny had taken him up on it then. The more time that passed, the more the nightmares fought him over control of his own body, the less he liked the idea of it. He should have insisted they do it then, when he’d been brave and it might have erased the rest. The longer he waited, the less he believed he could do it at all.

After a few minutes watching his almost-lover, it became clear Denny’s mind was about as far from sex as it was from Skate at the moment. He was watching something down in the yard.

“What are you looking at?” Skate hauled his ass out of bed and tried not to wince at the sensation of his feet hitting the floor. He still couldn’t decide if walking made the throbbing pain worse, but he was damn good and ready for it to start getting the fuck better.

“Get back in bed,” Denny admonished, but there was an abstracted tone to the words, and his frown deepened.

“Shut it,” Skate told him, but he did put a hand on his friend’s shoulder and some of his weight, too. He wished he was getting stronger faster, but what could he expect after everything? And then getting stabbed on top of that.
